Our Story
Matt Cheal is a distinguished British chef celebrated for his refined modern British cuisine and dedication to culinary excellence.
Early Career
Matt’s culinary journey commenced at the age of 14, working as a pot-washer at an Italian restaurant in Hampton-in-Arden and assisting in the kitchen of The Arden Hotel, where his father was the manager. At 16, he enrolled at the Birmingham College of Food, where his talent was recognized by renowned Midlands chef Andreas Antona. Antona offered Matt a placement at his restaurant, Simpsons, in 2000. Over 16 years at Simpsons, Matt ascended to the role of Head Chef in 2013, earning accolades such as Junior Sous Chef of the Year (2004) and Chef of the Year (2010). During his tenure, Simpsons maintained its Michelin star and was ranked 28th in the Sunday Times list of Top 30 Restaurants.
Establishing Cheal’s
In 2016, Matt embarked on a new venture by opening Cheal’s of Henley in Henley-in-Arden, offering fine dining in a relaxed setting. After seven successful years, the restaurant relocated to Knowle High Street in Solihull in 2023, rebranded as Cheal’s. The new establishment continues to showcase Matt’s commitment to seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, offering tasting menus, à la carte options, and a curated bar menu.
Community Engagement
Demonstrating a strong sense of community, Matt and his team donated the former Cheal’s of Henley building to Acorns Children’s Hospice in memory of their associate Simon Lewis. The proceeds from the building’s sale were directed to support the hospice’s services for children and families.
